Before editing pages, please check the Current Events page for recent changes to the wiki.
This site is running the same software as the (in)famous Wikipedia that you may have read about in the news. The searching capabilities inside of this wiki are pretty darn good and so is the ease of editing pages. Though we have taken many steps to close this wiki with some security patches, please, please, PLEASE do not put sensitive information such as passwords here!
Creating new wiki pages can be fun, but be careful where you put your pages. To keep this wiki somewhat organized, do the following:
- Create your pages inside your assigned namespace by specifying the 'NameSpace:ArticleName' convention in the URL line above. If, by some unimaginative reason, your group's assigned namespace is 'FOO,' then your article names should be 'FOO:Your_Article_Name'. By the way, underscores in article names become spaces. It's that easy!
- Please tag your pages with one or more meaningful category designations. You do so by adding the nifty tag anywhere in your page. Categories are another way of bringing order to chaos by grouping together alike pages. Categories can help make more sense of articles because you decide the tagging versus a simple word search. You can see a complete list of Wiki categories here.
To create a new page, you simply click in the URL field of your browser and add the new page name the "index.php" section of the URL, deleting anything following. For instance, if you wanted to create a page named "Awesome Information" under the "FOO" namespace, then type in the following into the URL field of your browser:
https://sowiki-dev.mit.edu/wiki/index.php/FOO:Awesome_Information
and, if you're allowed to create a page there, you can click on the "edit" button to start. It's really that easy. I'm not making this up.
Feel free to use most HTML tags inside of the wiki, but note that the "A" tag does not work for referencing other sites. For that, you'll have to use the Wiki tags. Tables can also be a bit tricky too, but once you get the hang of it, you'll learn to love the Wiki mark-up. Your browser should also present a series of shortcut buttons above the editing window to allow easy bolding, linking, etc. Feel free also to consult the Help in this wiki for helpful links.
Also remember that if you upload an image or other file, the file is more or less "public" to anyone with an MIT certificate. As such, be careful when uploading non-text data since security controls may not apply.
Remember, the word "wiki" is Hawaiian for "quick," so editing pages is meant to be quick and easy, once you get used to it. It does take a bit of getting used to, but soon you'll wonder how you managed documentation without a wiki.
Happy wikiing!
